  4. directory on the DirectX 8.1 SDK CD:

  13. ROLAND SOUNDCANVAS SOUND SET FOR GENERAL MIDI AND GS FORMAT

  15. The Roland SoundCanvas Sound Set includes the necessary sounds to make a 
  16. complete General MIDI compatible sound set.  It also includes additional 
  17. sounds necessary to make a complete GS Format compatible sound set.

  19. WHAT IS THE GS FORMAT?
  20.  
  21. The GS Format is a standardized set of specifications for sound sources 
  22. that defines the manner in which multitimbral sound generating devices 
  23. will respond to MIDI messages.  The GS Format also complies with General 
  24. MIDI System Level 1.
  25.  
  26. The GS Format also defines a number of other details over and above the 
  27. features of General MIDI.  These include unique specifications for sound 
  28. and functions available for tone editing, effects, and other specifications 
  29. concerning the manner in which sound sources will respond to MIDI messages.  
  30. Any device that is equipped with GS Format sound sources can faithfully 
  31. reproduce both General MIDI sound recordings and GS Format MIDI sound 
  32. recordings.

  50. Roland SoundCanvas Sound Set. Roland Corporation U.S. owns the Sample Set 
  51. and all copyrights pertaining thereto and has licensed the Sample Set for 
  52. use solely on Microsoft operating system products and Microsoft Application 
  53. Products.

  55. Roland reserves all rights to the Sample Set not expressly granted by Roland 
  56. Corporation U.S. or by Microsoft under the terms of Microsoft's End User 
  57. License Agreement.

  60. part of a Microsoft operating system product installation and under the terms
  61. of Microsoft's End User License Agreement. The Sample Set may not be
